...There is a high coastal terrace on the coast, but it ends at a sea cliff, below which is a narrow sandy beach, through which the national highway passes. Usuya, where the Matsumae Domain's land contractor Suhara Kakubei opened a herring fishing ground in 1782 (Tenmei 2), is at the southern end of the town area, and there are fishing ports in Minatomachi (formerly Onika) and Usuya. Two kilometers south of Minatomachi is the guardhouse of the Hanada family, a fisherman from Otaru, which was built in 1905 and housed 250 fishermen during the peak of herring fishing season. It has been designated an Important Cultural Property. ...
