A city in the northern part of Nagasaki Prefecture. It includes Hario Island, separated by the Sasebo Strait, and the northern tip of the Goto Islands. It was incorporated as a city in 1902. Its port is a good harbor facing Sasebo Bay, and since the establishment of the Naval Base in 1886, it has developed rapidly and flourished as a military port city. Most of the city was lost in war damage during World War II, but it was designated a trading port and oil storage port in 1948 and was restored. It has become an industrial city centered on shipbuilding using the former naval arsenal, but most of the former naval facilities are still used by the U.S. Navy and the Self-Defense Forces, so it has a strong character as a base town. Shipbuilding, which was the main industry, has expanded into machinery and other industries since the shipbuilding recession in the 1970s, and structural transformation is being attempted. In addition, after being designated a technopolis, the Sasebo Techno Park has been developed and the location of high-technology industries is being promoted. Pearl farming is thriving, the city produces pottery, and it is also a fishing base. The Sasebo Line, Omura Line, Matsuura Railway, and Nishi Kyushu Expressway run through the area, and there are many scenic spots such as the Kujukushima Islands and Saikai Bridge in Saikai National Park. In 1992, the theme park Huis Ten Bosch opened on Hario Island. In April 2005, the towns of Yoshii and Sechibaru in Kitamatsuura County were incorporated, in March 2006, the towns of Osaza and Uku in Kitamatsuura County, and in March 2010, the towns of Emukae and Shikamachi in Kitamatsuura County were incorporated. Area: 426.06 km2 . Population: 261,101 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
