Maksimov, Vladimir Emel'yanovich
Born: December 9, 1932, Moscow
[Died] March 26, 1995. Author born in Paris, Soviet Union. Born into a working-class family, he lived the life of a reckless vagrant, but taught himself through reading. In 1956, he published his first collection of poems, Pokolenie na chasakh (The Sentinel Generation). In 1962, he published Zhiv chelovek (Man is Alive), a novella that was well received. He then wrote Sem' dnei tvoreniya (Seven Days of Creation), but was unable to publish it domestically, and instead published it in West Germany in 1971. This is an ambitious work that depicts the entirety of Soviet society through the history of three generations of the Rashkov family, railway workers, but the author defected to Paris in March 1974. In the same year, he became editor-in-chief of the magazine Continent, a publication for Russian literature, which was launched in West Germany.
