…He was protected by the couple Soma Aizo and Soma Kokko of Shinjuku Nakamuraya, and while battling lung disease, he sincerely pursued his own style while being devoted to Rembrandt's chiaroscuro and Renoir's sensual colors. He excelled in portraits, and in 1916 his "Portrait of Dr. Tanakadate" was selected as a special prize at the Bunten Exhibition, and in 1920 his "Portrait of Eroshenko" won praise at the Teiten Exhibition, and in 1922 he was named to the jury. In his later years, his "Self-Portrait Holding a Skull" (1923, Ohara Museum of Art) and "Portrait of an Elderly Mother" (1924, Suifu Meitoku-kai) showed an approach to Cezanne's figurative expression. …
