The Life of Saint Alexis

Japanese: 聖アレクシ伝 - せいアレクシでん（英語表記）Vie de Saint Alexis

One of the oldest hagiographies in French. Written around 1040, it is the first work of artistic merit in French literature. It is in the form of 125 stanzas in five lines of ten-syllable poetry, and is believed to have been written by Thibault de Vernon, a canon of Rouen, but this is not certain. It is a biography of the 4th century Roman ascetic Alexius, and describes concisely and with dramatic tension his life of devotion and yearning for God after a long journey, as well as the lamentation and grief of his family who learned of his circumstances.
