Kappore

Japanese:
Kappore

A folk song. In the late Edo period, in Edo, monks who were beggars wore white clothes, light yellow hoods, and red sandals, and danced while holding umbrellas and beating wooden clappers. The name is said to come from the accompaniment words of "Toba-bushi," which was popular during the Tenpo period (1830-1844), "I'm in love with you," or it is said to be a corrupted version of the Italian folk song "Capolen." It is a descendant of the Sumiyoshi dance "Yaatokose," which originated from the rice planting ritual at Sumiyoshi Shrine in Osaka, and is characterized by the lyrics "Kappore, kappore, kappore with sweet tea," and is a mix of bountiful harvest dance and vulgar humor. Around 1877 (Meiji 10), it also made its way into vaudeville halls, and was particularly popular for a dozen years. In January 1886, Ichikawa Danjūrō IX transformed it into a folk dance called "Hatsugasumisoramo Sumiyoshi" at the Shintomi-za Theatre in Tokyo, and the version that remains today is still performed today.
