Tanzania's legal capital. It is also the capital of Dodoma Province in the central region. Population 189,000 (1995), 506,943 (2018 estimate). As it occupies almost the center of the country, it was designated as the new capital of Tanzania in 1973. Since 1975, the central government offices were gradually relocated from Dar es Salaam, and the construction of the new capital was planned to be completed in 1983, but by 1999, only the presidential office and the legislative office were relocated, and the actual capital functions are still in Dar es Salaam. It is a transportation hub where a railway line connects Dar es Salaam on the east coast with the inland and a road branching off, and is a distribution center for agricultural products such as coffee, groundnuts, and livestock produced in the surrounding area.
