Urban blues. Blues, a type of African-American folk music that originated in the 19th century in rural areas of the American South, spread to cities in the 1920s and 1930s with the mass migration of African-Americans to industrial cities in the North and West, and gave rise to a new style during and after World War II. This is urban blues, which usually features electric guitars and singing in a screaming voice accompanied by a band that includes bass and drums. It had a major influence on rock.
