...The name Kitakata, the central city, was chosen in 1875 when five villages, including Koarai, merged to form the town, and was named after the fact that the northern part of the Aizu Basin had long been called Kitakata (northern). The old Kitakata town was a long, narrow twin town stretching north and south across the Tatsuki River, with Otatsuki on the east bank and Koarai on the west bank. It developed after the current Ban'etsu West Line was opened from Koriyama in 1904, and silk production became the main industry, in addition to lacquerware and sake brewing, which have been traditional industries since the Edo period. ...

…中心市街地の喜多方の町名は1875年小荒井村など5村が合併して成立した際，会津盆地の北部一帯が古くから北方（きたかた）と呼ばれていたことにちなんで付けられた。旧喜多方町は田付川をはさみ，東岸に小田付（おたづき），西岸に小荒井の集落がそれぞれ南北に細長く延びる双子町であった。1904年現在の磐越西線が郡山から開通してから発展し，江戸時代からの伝統産業である漆器業，酒造業のほか，製糸業が中心的産業となった。…
