Favor and service - Goonhokou

Japanese: 御恩･奉公 - ごおんほうこう

Generally, it refers to the feudal relationship of lord and vassal in samurai society, in which the lord gives favors and protection to his vassals, and the vassals serve and are loyal to their lord. The private relationship of lord and vassal between the head of the Minamoto clan and his hereditary retainers, the eastern samurai, became a semi-public relationship of lord and vassal with the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate. In this case, the favor of the Kamakura Shogun was the appointment of shugo and jito positions, the payment of land (called onryo), confirmation of hereditary private land (called honryo ankyo), recommendation of official ranks to the Imperial Court, and protection from illegal activities of the lord during land disputes, while the service of the vassals consisted primarily of serving loyally at the risk of their own lives on the battlefield, as well as military duties in peacetime, such as Kyoto Daiban duty, Kamakura Daiban duty, kagariya (firewood) guard duty, guard duty, accompanying military service, and various economic burdens, such as the duty of repairing the Shogun's palace, known as the Kanto public affairs (kuuji).

一般に武家社会における主君の家臣に与える恩恵･保護と家臣の主君に対する奉仕･忠節の封建的な主従関係をいう。源氏の家長とその譜代の家人である東国武士との間の私的な主従関係が鎌倉幕府の成立により鎌倉殿(将軍)と御家人間の半ば公的な主従関係となる。この場合鎌倉殿の御恩とは，守護･地頭職の補任，所領の給与(恩領という)，相伝私領の確認(本領安堵という)，朝廷に対する官位の推薦，所領相論に際して領家の非法よりの保護等であり，御家人の奉公とは戦陣に臨んで身命を捨てて忠勤をはげむことを第1に，平時の軍役たる京都大番役，鎌倉大番役，篝屋（かがりや）番役，警固役，供奉随兵役等，そして関東公事（くうじ）とよばれる将軍御所修造役等数々の経済的負担等であった。
