An abbreviation for Tesla Motors, a US electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, and a general term for the series of EVs manufactured by the company. Since the fall of 2016, the company's vehicles have been equipped with hardware such as various sensors and control devices required for autonomous driving.
Tesla Motors started as a venture company specializing in EVs, and as such, it has a different product profile and sales strategy than existing automobile companies with huge sales and service networks. The company's lineup of EVs includes the Tesla Roadster, a sports car produced from 2008 to 2012, the Tesla Model S, a sports sedan released in 2012, the Tesla Model X, an SUV (sports utility vehicle) released in 2015, and the Tesla Model 3, a compact sedan that began taking reservations in 2016 and is scheduled for release in 2017.
All of the company's EVs are primarily targeted at individual users, and are vehicles that emphasize the fun and comfort of driving, making them highly palatable. The structure is increasingly modularized, and updates to the software that controls the functions are distributed via the Internet. This means that users can upgrade the system themselves and expand its functions without having to go to a service center designated by the manufacturer.
Since the release of the Tesla Model S in 2012, software updates have added functions such as changing the vehicle height depending on road conditions, automatically changing lanes, and parking and unloading the vehicle from outside the vehicle. In Japan, with the approval of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, software including functions such as Auto Steering, which keeps the vehicle moving in the direction of the road, Auto Lane Change, which assists with lane changes, and Auto Park, which automates parking, has been distributed since 2016, and in the fall of the same year, software update 8.0, which added and improved the autonomous driving function, was distributed free of charge. Future updates will gradually realize advanced autonomous driving, which the company calls "Enhanced Autopilot," and the car will be able to automatically drive to its destination by having the on-board computer read the user's schedule management calendar and drive to the destination just by getting in the car.

米国の電気自動車(EV)メーカーであるテスラモーターズ社の略称及び、同社が製造するEV車のシリーズ名の総称。2016年秋以降、同社の車両には自動運転に必要な各種のセンサーや制御装置などのハードウエアがあらかじめ組み込まれてきた。
テスラモーターズはEV専業ベンチャー企業としてスタートした企業で、このため、巨大な販売・サービス網を持つ既存の自動車企業とは異なる製品の性格や販売戦略をとっている。同社の歴代のEV車シリーズのラインアップには、08年から12年まで生産されたスポーツカー仕様のテスラ・ロードスター、12年から発売されているスポーツセダン仕様のテスラ・モデルS、15年から発売されているSUV(スポーツ用多目的車)仕様のテスラ・モデルX、16年に予約受け付けが始まり17年中の発売を目指しているコンパクトセダン仕様のテスラ・モデル3の四つがある。
同社のEV車はいずれも個人ユーザーを主なターゲットとしており、走ることの楽しさや快適さを強調した嗜好性に富む車になっている。構造に関してはモジュール化が進み、機能を制御するソフトウエアが更新されるとインターネット経由で配布される。したがって、メーカー指定のサービス拠点を利用せずとも、ユーザー自身によりシステムをバージョンアップして、機能を拡張することが可能である。
テスラ・モデルSが発売された12年以降、ソフトウエアのアップデートで、路面状態によって車高を変えたり、車線を自動で変更したり、車外から車庫入れや車庫出しをする機能などが順次追加された。日本でも国土交通省の承認を得て、16年からは道路に沿って進行方向を維持するオートステアリング、車線変更をアシストするオートレーンチェンジ、駐車を自動化するオートパークなどの機能を含むソフトウエアが配信され、同年の秋には自動運転機能を追加改善したソフトウエアアップデート8.0が無償で配信された。今後のアップデートによって、同社が「エンハンストオートパイロット」と称する高度な自動運転が順次実現され、ユーザーのスケジュール管理用カレンダーを車載コンピューターが読み取って、乗車するだけで目的地まで走行するなどの自動運転が可能になるとしている。
