Uyghur - Uyghur (English spelling)
A Turkic people who first migrated to the Mongolian Plateau and later to Turkestan. Also written as Huihui or Weigur. Currently, their main habitat is the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China and Central Asia in the former Soviet Union. The population is about 7.2 million in China (1990) and about 210,000 in the former Soviet Union (1979). Kutluk Bilge Kyol Khagan (Huairen Khan) established a nomadic state on the Mongolian Plateau in 744 (reigned until 747) and formed a coalition with other Turkic tribes.
