A Turkic people who first migrated to the Mongolian Plateau and later to Turkestan. Also written as Huihui or Weigur. Currently, their main habitat is the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China and Central Asia in the former Soviet Union. The population is about 7.2 million in China (1990) and about 210,000 in the former Soviet Union (1979). Kutluk Bilge Kyol Khagan (Huairen Khan) established a nomadic state on the Mongolian Plateau in 744 (reigned until 747) and formed a coalition with other Turkic tribes. はじめモンゴル高原,のちトルキスタン方面に移住したトルコ系民族のひとつ。回紇,維吾爾とも記される。現在は中国の新疆ウイグル自治区と旧ソ連邦中央アジアを主たる居住地とし,人口は中国に約720万(1990),旧ソ連邦内に約21万(1979)。クトゥルク・ビルゲ・キョル・カガン(懐仁可汗)が744年にユチュケン山麓に拠って(在位747年まで)から840年までモンゴル高原に他のトルコ系部族との連合体による遊牧国家を出現させた。
