1843‐96 Egyptian journalist and educator. Influenced by Afghani, he contributed to the rise of the nationalist movement in the early 1880s by using his excellent writing and oratory. In his newspapers Tareek and then Tankit Watabqit, he actively supported the Arabi movement, which opposed the Egyptian viceroy and Western rule. After a few years of silence after the suppression of the rebellion, he launched the newspaper Ustaz. His understanding of the feelings and realities of the peasants, for whom he was called the "true peasant," and his anti-Western patriotism won him overwhelming popular support, and the newspaper's social influence led the British occupying authorities to expel him from the country.
