Kamomioya Shrine

Japanese: 賀茂御祖神社 - かもみおやじんじゃ
Kamomioya Shrine
A former Imperial Grand Shrine located in Shimogamo Izumikawa-cho, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. Commonly known as Shimogamo Shrine (Shimosha). Together with Kamo Wakeikazuchi Shrine (Kamigamo Shrine, Kamisha), it is collectively known as Kamo Shrine. It is the Ichinomiya of Yamashiro Province. One of the 22 shrines. It enshrines Tamayorihime-no-Mikoto, the mother of Kamo Wakeikazuchi-no-Mikoto, and Kamo Taketsunumi-no-Mikoto, his maternal grandfather. After the capital was moved to Heian, it was highly revered by the Imperial family as a deity protecting the royal palace, and successive imperial visits to the shrine became a regular occurrence. In 810, Emperor Saga's daughter, Princess Uchiko, was appointed Saiin. The annual Kamo Festival is held on the day of the rooster in April (now May 15th), and is famous as the Aoi Festival, which originated from the fact that the headgear of the shrine and the procession of the imperial envoys who visit the shrine are decorated with Futaba Aoi (double-leaf hollyhocks). The Okage Festival is said to retain the atmosphere of ancient times, and was held on the day of the horse in April (now May 12th). The east and west main halls are national treasures.
