Karkashandi, who studied Shafi’i law in Alexandria, worked at the Cairo Archives Office under the Mamluk Sultan Barquq (reigned 1382-89, 1390-99), and wrote the 14-volume great work “The Dawn Ṣubḥ al‐a’shā” to convey the essence of the scribal skills (kitāba) that he had mastered. The book is made up of 10 parts, and each part, “Scribal Knowledge,” “Geography,” “Composition of Documents 1, 2,” “Local Administration,” “Appointment of Officials,” “Iqta,” “Faith,” “Conclusion and Cancellation of Treaties,” and “Scribal Science,” is systematically organized by detailed divisions of chapters. …
