A biennial plant of the family Boraginaceae (APG classification: Boraginaceae). The stem is 40-80 cm tall. It has coarse, pubescent hairs all over. The leaves are opposite, oblong-lanceolate, and sharply pointed at both ends. From June to August, the racemes grow long and produce small, pale bluish-purple flowers with five petals. It grows on gravel and riverbeds in hilly and mountainous areas, and is found in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Korea. The species with dense, downward-pointing short hairs on the lower part of the stem is called C. furcatum Wall. ( C. zeylanicum (Vhal) Thunb.). The C. genus has four segments with hook-shaped hairs all over the surface and a flat or protruding dorsum. There are about 90 species in the world, of which three are in Japan.
