(1) A measure of the sharpness of resonance. If a graph is drawn with the angular frequency ω of the force applied to a vibrating body or the voltage applied to a resonant circuit on the horizontal axis and the energy w absorbed by the vibration system per unit time on the vertical axis, it will generally produce a mountain-shaped curve with a maximum value w _max at the angular frequency ω ₀ of the vibration system's natural vibration, as shown in the figure. This is called a resonance curve. Its shape is determined by the characteristics of the vibration system. When the angular frequency at which w = w _max /2 on this curve is ω ₀ ±⊿, 2⊿ is called the half-width and Q = ω ₀ /(2⊿) is called the Q value.

(1)共振の鋭さの尺度。振動体に加える力あるいは共振回路に加える電圧の角振動数ωを横軸に，単位時間に振動系に吸収されるエネルギーwを縦軸にとってグラフを描くと，一般に図のように振動系の固有振動の角振動数ω₀のところに最大値w_maxをもつ山形の曲線となる。これを共鳴曲線と呼ぶ。その形は振動系の特性に応じて決まる。この曲線でw＝w_max/2となる角振動数がω₀±⊿であるとき，2⊿を半値幅，Q＝ω₀/(2⊿)をQ値と呼ぶ。
