Nobukage Amano

Nobukage Amano
Year of death: September 8, 18th year of the Kyoho era (October 15, 1733)
Year of birth: 25 September 1663 (25 October 1663)
A scholar of Japanese classics in the mid-Edo period. A samurai of the Nagoya (Owari) domain. After the death of his father Nobuyuki, he joined the Yoriai in 1684, was promoted to the rank of gun chief in 1715, and retired in 1730 at the age of 68. He studied under Deguchi Nobuyoshi and Yoshimi Yukikazu. In 1698, he was ordered by the domain lord Tokugawa Tsunamasa to take part in the compilation of the Owari Fudoki. Taking advantage of this leisurely position, he devoted his life to writing about the ethics and customs of Owari, gods, and classics in general, and produced a large number of compilations. The most representative of these is Shiojiri (over 170 volumes, completed in 1733, unpublished during the Edo period), which took him 35 years to compile. He said that he had compiled excerpts from Japanese and Chinese classics and information he had observed, "to be kept ready for leisure and remembrance," and that he had written them down as he had done, both in quantity and quality, and that his wide-ranging empirical investigations provided considerable inspiration to subsequent scholars of Japanese classics, including Tanikawa Shigeki.
