A gastropod shell of the Bucconidae family that lives on sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of 200 to 500 meters in the Sea of Japan (illustration). The mollusk has black spots but is generally white, so it is sold under the name white bait. The shell is 12 cm high and 7 cm wide. It has eight layers and each layer is well inflated. It is covered with a thin, pale yellow skin with many thin lines all over. The shell opening is round and the outer edge is thickened and curved back. The lid is thin and round. Fish meat or other ingredients are placed in a clam cage and allowed to sink to the seabed, and the fish that come to eat and become trapped inside the cage are collected. Males have a large penis on the back of the mollusk.

日本海の水深200～500mの砂泥底にすむエゾバイ科の巻貝（イラスト）。軟体は黒斑があるが全体に白いのでシロバイの名で売られる。殻の高さ12cm，太さ7cm。巻きは8階で各層はよく膨らむ。薄い淡黄色の皮をかむり，全面に細く，多くの筋がある。殻口はまるくて，外縁は厚くなって反り返る。蓋は薄くてまるい。蛽籠に魚肉などを入れて海底に沈め，それを食べに寄ってきて籠の中に閉じ込められたのを採取する。軟体の背上に雄では大きな陰茎がある。
