…First, two English dictionaries, presumably edited by John Kersey, the New English Dictionary (1702) and the Anglo-Britannica (1708), included not only difficult and specialized words but also many everyday words, making them a step toward general English dictionaries. Nathaniel Bailey's (died 1742) Universal Etymological Dictionary (1721) took this character as a general dictionary even further and contributed to the compilation of full-fledged English dictionaries by adding examples from contemporary writers, albeit on a small scale.
