Toshinobu Okumura

Japanese:
Toshinobu Okumura

Years of birth and death unknown. Ukiyo-e artist of the mid-Edo period. A pupil of Okumura Masanobu, he was active from the late 1710s to the 1740s (the Kyoho and Kan'en eras). A representative artist of the Benie and Urushi-e period. His style of painting followed that of his master Masanobu, but his works are lively and full of gentle volume. His depictions are detailed and incorporate just the right amount of sensuality, and he often left behind works that surpass his master's. He focused on portraits of beautiful women and actors, and his work was concentrated in the decade or so around 1730, so he is thought to have been a short-lived artist. His representative works include "Yamashita Kinsaku's Oiso Tora," "Segawa Kikunojo's Journey Through the Kuzunoha River," and "Natsumoya Umuneake Triptych."
