Ryukei Shimizu

Ryukei Shimizu
1659-1732 A Buddhist sculptor from the early to mid-Edo period.
Born in 1612. Born in Kyoto. He created Buddhist statues under Tankai at Hozan-ji Temple on Mount Ikoma in Yamato (Nara Prefecture). After Tankai's death, he worked independently. He also created dolls, and is known for "Fuzoku Hyakunin Isshu" (still extant). He passed away in November 17th year of the Kyoho era. He was 74 years old.

万治(まんじ)2年生まれ。京都の人。大和(奈良県)生駒山宝山寺の湛海(たんかい)のもとで仏像制作にあたる。湛海没後は単独で活躍。人形も制作し,「風俗百人一衆」(現存)が知られる。享保(きょうほう)17年11月死去。74歳。
