An old town in the northern part of the Shimabara Peninsula, Minamitakaki District, Nagasaki Prefecture. It is located at the northern foot of the Unzen volcano and faces the Ariake Sea to the north. It is believed to be the location of an ancient county office, and remains of an ancient settlement and the jori system remain. The Shimabara Railway runs through the town, and a ferryboat runs between Tabira Port and Nagasu Port in Kumamoto Prefecture on the opposite shore. The town produces rice, wheat, strawberries, and melons, and also engages in forestry and coastal fishing. In October 2005, it merged with Mizuho Town, Agatsuma Town, Aino Town, Chijiwa Town, Obama Town, and Minamikushiyama Town in Nishitakaki District to become Unzen City. 38.20 km2 . Population: 11,798 (2003).

A former town in Higashi-Kunisaki District, in the northern part of the Kunisaki Peninsula in Oita Prefecture. Most of the town area is mountainous and hilly. Settlements are located along the rivers that flow into the Suo-Nada Sea. Tobacco leaf and mandarin orange cultivation is thriving, and the town also has a fishing industry. Taketazu has a good port, and the Suo-Nada Ferry connecting the town to Shunan City departs and arrives here. In March 2006, the town merged with Kunisaki Town, Musashi Town, and Aki Town in Higashi-Kunisaki District to become a city, Kunisaki City. Area: 72.91 km2 . Population: 5,824 (2003).

Fujita, the town's center, developed as a post station on the Oshu Kaido road, and is served by the Tohoku Main Line and the Tohoku Expressway. Rice and fruit are cultivated here. The town is the site of an ancient battlefield from the Bunji War (1189), when Minamoto no Yoritomo conquered the Oshu Fujiwara clan. The town sustained damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 37.95 km2 . Population: 10,086 (2010).

大分県国東(くにさき)半島北部,東国東郡の旧町。町域の大部分は山地,丘陵地。周防(すおう)灘にそそぐ河川に沿って集落がある。葉タバコ,ミカンの栽培が盛んで,水産業も行う。竹田津は良港をもち,周南市と結ぶ周防灘フェリーが発着。2006年3月,東国東郡国東町,武蔵町,安岐町と合併し市制,国東市となる。72.91km2。5824人(2003)。
