...The "tang" in "tozan" refers to imported goods, and in contrast to the Japanese "zan-dome" stripes that began to be imitated in Japan in the late Edo period, imported items came to be called tozan-dome. Another name for tozan is "Okushima," and the "Moritsada Manko" states that this name was derived from the fact that the Shogun used tozan for hakama fabric and also used it in the Ooku. Its distinctive feature is that it is woven using two extremely thin flat cotton threads in both the warp and weft directions, giving it a very dense, smooth texture and a glossy finish....
