[Five regions: Kuninaka, Nishiyamanaka, Higashiyamanaka, Oku, and Nanzan]
Nara Prefecture is divided into two parts, the north and the south, by the Median Tectonic Line. Taking into consideration the differences in natural conditions, history, industry, and commercial areas, the north is further divided into four parts: Kunnaka (Nara Basin), Nishisanchu (Ikoma and Kongo Mountains), Higashisanchu (Kasagi Mountains), and Oku (Uda and Ryumon Mountains). Together with this, the south includes Nanzan (Yoshino Mountains), making a total of five regions. (1) Kunnaka: Almost the entire Nara Basin, its area only about one-tenth of the prefecture, but it has occupied a central position as the flattest area in Yamato Province since ancient times, and so it is still called Kunnaka today.
