French jurist. Born in Orléans, he inherited the position of présidial of the superior court of the city from his father (1720), and served in that position until his death there. During this time (1750-72), he also served as a professor at the University of Orléans. He studied Roman law, canon law, and customary law, and was active as a member of the "school of customary law" that sought to unify French law by identifying common elements among various customary laws and recognizing general law unique to France. His academic style was not influenced by the natural law school of his time in Germany or his own philosophy, but was strongly inclined toward realism and pragmatism.

フランスの法律家。オルレアンで生まれ，同地の上座裁判所présidialの評定官の職を父から相続(1720)したのち，同地で死去するまでその職にあり，またこの間(1750‐72)オルレアン大学の教授をも務めた。ローマ法，教会法とともに慣習法の研究にも従事し，各種慣習法の中の共通要素を明らかにし，そこにフランス固有の一般法を認識してフランス法を統一しようとした〈慣習法学派〉の一人として活躍した。学風は，同時代のドイツなどの自然法学派の影響や彼独自の哲学といったものはなく，現実主義･実用主義的傾向が強かった。
