Kitaminoru

Noh shite actor, 15th head of the Kita school. Born in Shiga Prefecture. Adopted by the previous head of the Kita school, Kita Roppeita, he was mentored by him. His style of performance is upright, full of spirit and enthusiasm. In 1954, he participated in the Venice International Theater Festival as the leader of the first overseas performance of Noh. His collaboration with Toki Zenmaro has been extensive, including "Yumedono", "Shoe no Nyonin", "Sanetomo", "Tsuru", "Paul the Apostle", "Shinran", and others. He succeeded the head of the Kita school in 1971. His children are Nagayo (1924-) and Sadayo (1926-2003). Goto Tokuzo is his older brother. He also made a great contribution to nurturing many excellent young performers, including Akiyo Tomoeda, Yasutsugu Kagawa, and Tetsuo Shiotsu. He became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1975. His books include "Performance Notes," "Before and After a Noh Performance," and "Yohkyoku Lectures."

能のシテ方、15世喜多流宗家。滋賀県に生まれる。先代宗家喜多六平太(ろっぺいた)の養子となり、その薫陶を受けた。規矩(きく)正しく、気合いに満ちた意欲的な芸風。1954年(昭和29)ベネチア国際演劇祭に能の初の海外公演の団長として参加。土岐善麿(ときぜんまろ)との共同による新作能活動も、『夢殿』『青衣女人(しょうえのにょにん)』『実朝(さねとも)』『鶴(つる)』『使徒パウロ』『親鸞(しんらん)』ほか、広範囲にわたっている。71年宗家を継ぐ。子に長世(ながよ)(1924― )、節世(さだよ)(1926―2003)。後藤得三(とくぞう)は実の兄。また友枝昭世(ともえだあきよ)、香川靖嗣、塩津哲生ほか多数の優れた若手を養成した功績も大きい。75年日本芸術院会員となる。著書に『演能手記』『演能前後』『謡曲講座』ほか。
