Born 22 February 1889 at Cartmerfeld, Lancashire [Died] January 9, 1943. Coniston, Lancashire. British philosopher, historian, and archaeologist. Studied at Oxford University, served as a member of the university's council in 1912 and as professor of metaphysics from 1935 to 1941. Initially interested in archaeology and history, he wrote "Roman Britain" (1936), but later turned to philosophy, philosophy of history, and philosophy of art. In philosophy, he started from a critique of Oxford realism represented by J. Wilson, and from an idealistic standpoint attempted to synthesize philosophy and history. In philosophy of art, he started from B. Croce and considered art from the perspective of expression and language. Main works: "Religion and Philosophy" (16), "Speculum Mentis" (24), "Outlines of Philosophy of Art" (25), "An Essay on Philosophical Method" (33), "The Principles of Art" (38), "An Autobiography" (39), "An Essay on Metaphysics" (40), "The New Leviathan" (42), "The Idea of History" (46), "Essays in the Philosophy of Art" (64, edited by A. Donagan). Collingwood |
