Prague's cathedral. A representative example of late Gothic architecture in Czechoslovakia. Dedicated to St. Vitus. Construction began in 1344, and the chancel was consecrated in 1385. The first half of the work was done by Mathieu d'Arras (?-1352) from Arras, France, and the second half was completed by Peter Parler (Parler family) who was invited from Germany, in a refined French Gothic style. The ceilings of the south entrance and other areas feature a delicate vault structure with flying ribs. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
