It is the capital of KwaZulu-Natal Province (formerly Natal Province) in the eastern part of South Africa. It is located at an altitude of 670 meters at the eastern foot of the Drakensberg Mountains. It has a population of 378,126 (1996). It was founded in 1839 by the Boers as they migrated inland, and was named after their leaders Pieter Retief and Gerritt Maritz. It became the capital of the Republic of Natal in 1856. In addition to various administrative offices, it also has cultural facilities such as the University of Natal, the museum, and the art gallery. After World War II, industry developed, producing dairy products, aluminum products, rubber products, furniture, and more. There are many historical sites and scenic spots in the vicinity, such as Fort Napier, World's View Rock, and Howick Falls.

南アフリカ共和国東部、クワズールー・ナタール州(旧ナタール州)の州都。ドラケンスベルク山脈東麓(とうろく)の標高670メートルに位置する。人口37万8126(1996)。1839年ブーア人の内陸移動によって建設され、その指導者ピーター・レティーフとゲルト・マリッツGerritt Maritzの名にちなんで命名された。1856年ナタール共和国の首都となった。各種行政機関のほか、ナタール大学、博物館、美術館などの文化施設がある。第二次世界大戦後、工業が発展し、酪農製品、アルミニウム製品、ゴム製品、家具などを生産する。近郊にはネイピア要塞(ようさい)、ワールズ・ビュー岩丘、ホーウィック滝など史跡、名勝が多い。
