It is the capital of KwaZulu-Natal Province (formerly Natal Province) in the eastern part of South Africa. It is located at an altitude of 670 meters at the eastern foot of the Drakensberg Mountains. It has a population of 378,126 (1996). It was founded in 1839 by the Boers as they migrated inland, and was named after their leaders Pieter Retief and Gerritt Maritz. It became the capital of the Republic of Natal in 1856. In addition to various administrative offices, it also has cultural facilities such as the University of Natal, the museum, and the art gallery. After World War II, industry developed, producing dairy products, aluminum products, rubber products, furniture, and more.
