[Died] February 17, 1874, Brussels. Belgian mathematician, statistician, and astronomer. Influenced by P. Laplace and J. Fourier, he became interested in probability theory, and in 1835 published "On the Development of Man and His Abilities - An Essay on Social Physics," a landmark work in the history of statistics, which earned him fame. The work provides a detailed discussion of French criminals and other subjects, making full use of new statistical techniques, and was a pioneer in the widespread use of mathematical methods in social science research. He is considered to be the embodiment of the positivist spirit of the 19th century.
