The origin of the Kumano Gongen deity's appearance - Kumano Gongen Gosuijaku Engi
This is a record of the events that led to Kumano Gongen being enshrined in Kumano in Kishu and becoming known to the world. The complete version has not been handed down, but its contents are known from citations in Chokan Kanbun, Shobodaisan Tou Engi, and Kumanosan Ryakuki. Kumano Sansho Gongen leaves Mount Tiantai in the Tang Dynasty and descends to Mount Hiko in Chinzei, Ishizuchi Peak in Iyo, and Yuzuruha Peak in Awaji, then travels under a pine tree on the north shore of the west coast of Mount Kii Kirime, eventually descending to Mount Kannokuramine south of Kumano Shingu, then resting in Ishibuchidani north of Shingu Higashiasukasha, and finally resting at Ichinoki in Oyuhara, Hongu.
