This is a type of Kagura dance performed in the Ochi district of Shimane Prefecture, Gotsu City, and parts of Hamada City at the annual festival of Omoto-jinja (every 5th, 7th, or 13th year). It is one of the Izumo style Kagura dances, and is also called Omoto-mai. Today, the festival site is often set up in the worship hall of a shrine, with the eastern pillar called Motoyama and the western pillar called Hayama, and rice bales tied to each pillar. Here, Omoto-jinja, who is the ancestor deity of the village, and other deities are enshrined, and Kagura is performed under a canopy hung in the center. Originally, this Kagura dance was performed only by priests, but since the Meiji period, the priests have taken charge of the rituals and the ritual-like Torimono-mai, and dancers from each village take on the theatrical Shinno performances. In the "Mitsuna Festival" stage, a divine spirit possesses the body of the Takudayu through a straw snake, causing the Takudayu to faint and issue a divine message, a form of divine possession and prophecy that is rare today, and Omoto Kagura is distinctive in that it has retained this ancient style. It has been designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan, and in 2004 (Heisei 16), the Omoto Kagura Tradition Museum was opened in Gotsu City.
