A general term for mammals belonging to the order Chiroptera, suborder Macrochiroptera, family Pteropodidae. They eat fruit or pollen, have thin snouts, large eyes and faces resembling those of foxes. They are broadly divided into the subfamily Pteropodinae, the subfamily Pterinae, the subfamily Pterinae, and the subfamily Pterinae, and consist of 42 genera and 171 species. They vary widely in shape, size, habitat and food. Extant species are found in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Australia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia, but fossils have been discovered from the Middle Oligocene in Italy. 翼手目大翼手亜目オオコウモリ科Pteropodidaeに属する哺乳類の総称。果食または花粉食で吻(ふん)が細く,眼が大きな顔がキツネに似ている。オオコウモリ亜科,シタナガオオコウモリ亜科,テングフルーツオオコウモリ亜科,オナシフルーツコウモリ亜科に大別され,42属171種からなる。形態,大きさ,生息場所,食物とも変化に富む。現生種はアフリカ,アジア,オーストラリア,メラネシア,ミクロネシア,ポリネシアなどの亜熱帯,熱帯に分布するが,イタリアの中部漸新世から化石が発見されている。
