...Bronze casting techniques have been developed since ancient times, and there are excellent works of Buddhist sculpture in Japan, but the term "copper statue" was only used after the Meiji period. The Italian Ragusa, who came to Japan in 1876 as a teacher when the Kobu Bijutsu Gakko opened, introduced Western-style sculpture techniques to Japan. One of his students, Okuma Ujihiro (1856-1934), was commissioned to create the "Statue of Omura Masujiro," which is still at Yasukuni Shrine.
