Gujo Domain

Japanese:
Gujo Domain
A small-to-medium-sized Fudai domain with its headquarters in Hachiman, Gujo County, Mino Province (present-day Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture), also known as the Hachiman Domain. It began when Endo Yoshitaka, who sided with the Tokugawa in the Battle of Sekigahara, was granted his former fief of 27,000 koku. Under the reign of the third lord, Tsunetomo, the development of Hachiman-cho, the castle town, progressed, and the shogunate changed his status from castle lord to castle lord himself. In 1677 (Enpo 5) during the reign of the fourth lord, Tsuneharu, a peasant uprising (Enpo Ikki) broke out, demanding a reduction in taxes and other duties, and the domain system was shaken by divisions and conflicts within the family. In 1692, Inoue Masato replaced Endo and entered the domain from Kasama, Hitachi Province, with a fief of 50,000 koku, and reduced the number of vassals in order to rebuild the finances. In 1697, the Kanamori clan entered the area from Kaminoyama, Dewa Province with a stipend of 38,000 koku, but in 1754 (the 4th year of the Horeki era) during the reign of the second lord, Yorinishi, peasant uprisings against tax increases (Gujo Uprising/Horeki Uprising) and the Hakusan Shrine Incident in Itoshiro, Echizen Province (Itoshiro Incident) occurred, leading to Yorinishi's land being confiscated in 1758 and him being placed under permanent custody by the Nanbu family of Morioka Domain, Mutsu Province. Immediately after the Gujo Uprising, Aoyama Yoshimichi entered the area from Miyazu, Tango Province with a stipend of 48,000 koku, and the following year issued various decrees, including prohibitions on ganging and direct appeals, as well as on conspiracies, conspiracies, graffiti, and posters, in an attempt to restore the rule that had been shaken by the uprisings. In 1773, he sent troops to put down a peasant uprising against land surveys in Hida Province (the Ohara Disturbance). The second lord, Yoshisada, and the sixth lord, Yukishige, held important positions in the shogunate, and during the reign of the seventh lord, Yukiyoshi, the domain was unable to reach a consensus on the matter when the Meiji Restoration and Boshin War broke out, and later, when it was decided to surrender to the new government, the faction supported the shogunate.
