Rime on trees

Japanese:
Rime on trees

Nowadays, a type of frost is called juhyo, but in the past it was a general term for ice that adheres to tree branches. Some people also refer to juhyo as juhyo and others as hoarfrost. Ice that adheres to trees and other objects has various names depending on the region. The famous "hanaboro" of Mount Unzen in Kyushu can be either juhyo or crude ice. Nagano Prefecture's "kibana" is closer to juhyo. In Niigata Prefecture, it is called "shiga." The conditions for juhyo to form are strong winds and the coming and going of clouds and mist. When the ones attached to trees grow large, they are called monsters because of their characteristic shape. The monsters on Mount Zao in Tohoku are famous, and they form when the clouds and mist mixed with snow that accompany the winter monsoon blow over the Aomoritodomatsu trees growing on the windward slopes for a long period of time. The frost seen on the summit of Mount Fuji grows during bad weather with southwesterly winds in early spring and turns into thick, coarse frost. A seasonal word for winter.
