This is an empirical law that is stably observed between the proportion of food expenses in a household's consumption expenditure and income level. It is named after the discoverer of this law, CLE Engel. It is also called "Engel's Law." In his 1857 paper "Production and Consumption in the Kingdom of Saxony," Engel discovered a stable law in the relationship between household income level and food expenses based on data from household surveys conducted by E. Dupechaud and Le Play. In other words, it is an empirical law that "the higher the household income, the lower the proportion of food expenses in total consumption expenditure."
