Shirase Glacier

A glacier located about 100 km south of Showa Station in Antarctica, flowing into the southernmost part of Lützow-Holm Bay. The terminus is about 9 km wide. The surface of the terminus is rich in crevasses and floats on the sea. The Shirase Glacier drains about 14 billion tons of ice from its basin, which has an area of ​​about 200,000 square kilometers, every year. Japan named it in February 1961 (Showa 36) after Shirase Nobu, who explored Antarctica in 1912 (Meiji 45).

南極大陸、昭和基地の南約100キロメートルにあって、リュツォ・ホルム湾の最南部に注ぐ氷河。末端の幅は約9キロメートル。末端の表面はクレバスに富み、海に浮かぶ。面積約20万平方キロメートルの白瀬氷河流域の氷を、年間約140億トン流出している。1912年（明治45）に南極を探検した白瀬矗(しらせのぶ)にちなんで、1961年（昭和36）2月に日本が命名。
