A glacier located about 100 km south of Showa Station in Antarctica, flowing into the southernmost part of Lützow-Holm Bay. The terminus is about 9 km wide. The surface of the terminus is rich in crevasses and floats on the sea. The Shirase Glacier drains about 14 billion tons of ice from its basin, which has an area of about 200,000 square kilometers, every year. Japan named it in February 1961 (Showa 36) after Shirase Nobu, who explored Antarctica in 1912 (Meiji 45).
