A type of collective retail shopping district developed in the United States after World War II as a result of the so-called urban sprawl phenomenon, which was the movement of city dwellers to the suburbs, and the spread of the personal automobile. A large piece of land was secured near the city, and facilities such as drive-in theaters were established. A large-scale shopping district was planned to have a large-scale retailer such as a department store or supermarket at its core, and to bring together chain stores, specialty stores, and general retailers to enable one-stop shopping (shopping where you can buy all the products you need by stopping at one store).
