An ancient Syrian city in the Bekaa Plateau. Its name means "Lord of the Bekaa." Located halfway between Beirut and Damascus, it flourished as a key transportation and commercial center, and the ancient Greeks called it Heliopolis (City of the Sun). It later became a Roman territory, and Roman ruins such as the temples of Dionysus and Jupiter remain. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1984.
