Baalbek

An ancient Syrian city in the Bekaa Plateau. Its name means "Lord of the Bekaa." Located halfway between Beirut and Damascus, it flourished as a key transportation and commercial center, and the ancient Greeks called it Heliopolis (City of the Sun). It later became a Roman territory, and Roman ruins such as the temples of Dionysus and Jupiter remain. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1984. ベカー高原にあるシリアの古都。名は〈ベカーの主〉の意。ベイルートとダマスカスの中間にあって交通，商業の要地として栄え，古くギリシア人は，ヘリオポリス（太陽の都）と呼んだ。のちローマ領となり，ディオニソスやユピテルの神殿などローマ時代の遺跡が残っている。1984年世界文化遺産に登録。
