The name means "House of Wisdom" in Arabic, and is a research institute established in Baghdad in the 9th century by the Abbasid caliph Ma'mun. Its main purpose was to collect Greek books on philosophy and natural science and to translate them into Arabic. It inherited the traditions of the Sassanid school of Jundishapur, and its direct predecessor was the library called Khizāna al-Ḥikma (Treasury of Wisdom) during the time of Caliph Harun al-Rashid.
