Japanese: 桃林亭東玉 - とうりんていとうぎょく

1786-1849 A lecturer in the late Edo period.
Born in 1786. He left his Zen monkhood to become a secular man, and was active in Edo under the name Tsukada Tairyu. His simple lectures were well received, and he gained popularity in a traveling show in Osaka in 1831, earning him the nickname "The Gem of the Eastern Capital." It is said that this is where he got the name Azumagaya. He passed away on August 19, 1859, at the age of 64. His surname was Abe, and he was commonly known as Momojiro. His pen name was Gyokusei.

天明6年生まれ。禅僧から還俗(げんぞく)し,塚田太琉と名のって江戸で活躍。平易な講釈が好評で,天保(てんぽう)8年大坂での旅興行でも人気を博し,「東都の玉」と称された。東玉の名はこれによるという。嘉永(かえい)2年8月19日死去。64歳。姓は阿部。通称は桃次郎。号は玉整。
