...A city at the southern tip of Miyagi Prefecture. In 1954, Shiroishi Town was incorporated into the city by the merger of six villages: Kosugo, Saigawa, Ohira, Otakazawa, Shirakawa, and Fukuoka. In 1957, Obara Village was incorporated. Population 41,852 (1995). Located in the Shiroishi River basin, a tributary of the Abukuma River, the city occupies the southern half of the Shiroishi Basin. In the Middle Ages, it was the base of the Shiroishi clan, and in the early modern period, it occupied a key location in the southern part of the Sendai domain. The Katakura clan, a senior vassal of the clan, lived in Shiroishi Castle, and a castle town was formed.
