Morbid appetite
Also called pica. This refers to a change in food preferences due to digestive disorders caused by parasites such as roundworms, mental disorders such as mania or hysteria, or even pregnancy. A well-known example is the preference for sour foods during pregnancy. There have been cases of people eating vinegar, unripe fruit, mustard, salt, raw rice, charcoal, paper, etc., and in severe cases, clay, wall plaster (geophagia), chalk, incense, and even human feces.

異食症ともいう。回虫などの寄生虫による消化障害,あるいは躁病やヒステリーなどの精神障害,さらには妊娠などの原因によって,食物の嗜好が変ることをいう。妊娠時に酸味を好むようになるのはよく知られている例である。酢,未熟な果物,からし,食塩,生米,炭,紙などを食べ,ひどくなると粘土や壁土 (土食症) ,チョーク,線香などから人糞まで食べる例がある。
