Russian writer and statesman. Prince. He served as a military and political leader under Ivan IV (the Terrible). During the Livonian War, he defected to enemy Lithuania (Litwa). He wrote historical and political texts, which occupy a unique place in the history of 16th-century Russian literature. In particular, he attacked Ivan the Terrible's cruelty and tyranny in his correspondence with Ivan the Terrible and in his work Istoriya o velikom knyaze moskovskom (1573).
