This led to the establishment of a fife-drum corps that added flutes to the traditional drum corps, and the use of the sharmai, the precursor to the clarinet. With the Ottoman Empire's invasion of Europe that began in 1521, European countries were swept up in the Turkish Janissary corps, and were deeply impressed by their military bands (mehterhane) and their performances.
