…Information brought by the Crusaders who fought against the Turks in the 11th to 13th centuries led to a growing interest in Turkish military music, which made extensive use of various percussion and wind instruments. This led to the establishment of a fife-drum corps that added flutes to the traditional drum corps, and the use of the sharmai, the precursor to the clarinet. With the Ottoman Empire's invasion of Europe that began in 1521, European countries were swept up in the Turkish Janissary corps, and were deeply impressed by their military bands (mehterhane) and their performances. Vienna, in particular, was besieged by the Turkish army twice, in 1529 and 1683, and heard the mehterhane directly. …
