Oshio Chusai

Japanese: 大塩中斎 - おおしおちゅうさい

...He was a yoriki (police officer) at the Higashimachi Magistrate's Office in Osaka during the late Edo period and a scholar of Yangmingism. He committed suicide in February 1837 after starting a rebellion in Osaka. His father was Heihachiro Takataka and his mother was from the Onishi clan. There are two theories about his birthplace: Tenma in Osaka and Mima County in Awa. He lost his parents at a young age and followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, who was also a yoriki. His childhood name was Bunnosuke, and he was called Heihachiro when he grew up, and his given name was Masataka, later Goso. His pen names were Koki and Shiki, and after he retired from his position as a yoriki he was called Rensai or Chusai. During his time as a yoriki, he was highly valued by Higashimachi Magistrate Takai Sanenori and achieved the following three major achievements, earning him a reputation for his honesty. For example, in 1827 (Bunsei 10), he suppressed the Christian-like religion of Toyoda Mitsugi and others, in 1829 he executed Yuge Shinuemon, the chief deputy of the Nishimachi Magistrate's Office, who had committed fraud in cooperation with four hinin (outcasts), and in 1830 he exiled several dozen monks who had broken their precepts.

…江戸後期の大坂東町奉行所与力で陽明学者。1837年2月に大坂で乱を起こして自殺。父は平八郎敬高，母は大西氏。出生地には大坂天満と阿波美馬郡の2説がある。幼くして両親を失い，与力であった祖父のあとを継ぐ。幼名文之助，長じて平八郎と称し，諱（いみな）は正高，のち後素。字は子起，士起，与力退職後は連斎または中斎という。与力在職中，東町奉行高井実徳に重用されて下記の三大功績をあげ，世に廉直の評が高かった。すなわち1827年(文政10)豊田貢（みつぎ）らのキリシタン類似の宗教を弾圧し，29年には四ヵ所非人と結んで不正を働いた西町奉行所筆頭与力弓削新右衛門を処断し，30年には破戒僧数十名を遠島の刑に処した。…
