...His eldest son, Ahmad, restored the throne and in 1951 launched an opening-up policy and established a cabinet system, but in September 1962, Ahmad's death was followed by a coup by Colonel Salar, which abolished the monarchy and established a republic. The republican government was supported by the Arab League (Egypt) and joined the United Nations in 1963, but the royalist faction led by Ahmad's son, Badr, launched a major offensive in various places with the support of Britain and Saudi Arabia, and Yemen was in a state of civil war until 1969 (Yemen War). Colonel Salar became president, promulgated a new constitution in April 1964, and concluded a military agreement with the Arab League, but after the defeat in the Third Arab-Israeli War in June 1967, mediation efforts were started to resolve the internal conflict in Yemen.
