A port on the coast of Wakasa Bay that flourished from the Heian to the Kamakura periods. Kiyama, now Mikata Town, Fukui Prefecture (now Wakasa Town), is located on the eastern shore of Nakanoumi (Lake Suigetsu) of the Mikata Five Lakes, and faces Lake Kugushi to the north. In 1065, when shipping tributes from Etchu Province, Kiyama appeared along with Shiotsu, Oura, and Kizu in Omi and Tsuruga in Echizen in a document issued by the Dajokan that prohibited the taking of "shosairyo" (a fee to purchase goods) at ports and other places along the way. At the time, Kiyama was one of the key ports on the way from the Hokuriku region to Kyoto via Omi. As Obama Port prospered, Kiyama seems to have gradually declined around the time of the Northern and Southern Courts period. Kiyama is home to Uwa Nishi Shrine, a shrine listed in the Engishiki.
